10 Fun and Interactive Ways to Bring STEM Activities Home

Nov 25, 2015 12:00 AM

Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics, or STEM, are a vital part of our current lives and future. The world will always be in the need of scientists and innovators, and STEM education is where it all begins; helping children to become creative thinkers and problem solvers. These four subjects may be some of the most important studies for our kids to be learning at the present moment.

Much importance is now being given to STEM education, the result?  Many programs, classes, camps, and museum activities are becoming available for your child to learn STEM subjects. But why not take it a step further and bring STEM education home!

Here are a few of our favorite STEM Activities for your mad scientist, engineer, or forward thinker:

·         Start a "discovery jar"

Kids are full of questions. Encourage your child to fill a jar with question they may have about anything and everything. Motivate them to research the answers, one at a time, or come up with a practical solution to the topic. With these types of projects, the sky is the limit!

·         Use math in everyday scenarios

Practice math according to their educational level by using items at your home. Using electronic learning devices is another way to introduce math in a fun and stimulating way.

·         Explore animal and insect kingdoms

Our Mad Scientists have discovered that bugs outnumber humans nearly 200 to 1! Encourage your kids to explore and make new discoveries by exploring your backyard.

·         Encourage your little techie to explore computer science

Since you don't need to be a professional to create smooth and effective apps these days, give your budding engineer the tools to learn easy-to-use platforms. You never know, this could spark an interest that could guide them for a lifetime!

·         Cook or bake with your kids

Everyone loves food, cooking and baking is an essential life skill, without to mention the large amount of math, science and problem solving involved. Weigh and measure ingredients, explore their origins, and think about vitamins and minerals and transformation of liquids to solids.

·         Start a micro-garden

Mad Science can vouch for the fact that children like working with their hands and growing things. Try growing lettuce, cucumbers and tomatoes in small pots in a sunny location.

·         Go star gazing and work on basic physics

Much can be learnt about our solar system. Your little learner can get ahead of the curve, encourage them to watch and document what they see. Encourage them to do research or watch informative animated YouTube videos, such as those on the Master Physics channel. You may even learn something yourself!

At Mad Science, we know how important sharpening the mind is, which is why focusing on STEM activities and mental growth and development are so important. That's why Mad Science offers a wide variety of STEM activities and programs for your kids to enjoy in our bay area after school programs
