Healthy Food Tips for Your Child’s Next Party

Nov 6, 2015 12:00 AM

Cold weather has made an entrance and soon enough kids will have time off from school, and families will be reunited. Although it is a fun time of year, many parents may feel uneasy about feeding their children large amounts of sugar during the holiday season. Many treats are full of artificial colors and flavors, as well as high fructose corn syrup and other ingredients that are difficult to pronounce.

With that said; how can one host the upcoming holiday gatherings or birthday parties without junk food, candy, and other sugary snacks? Get inspired by these healthy, kid-friendly alternatives:

1.       Substitute pop with 100% fruit juice, naturally flavored waters or homemade iced teas made from fruity herbal teas.

2.       Send kids home with goody-bags consisting of art supplies and small toys, such as; themed pencils, erasers, stickers, rings, or necklaces, rather than candy.

3.       Reduce sugar intake where you can by opting for smaller portion sizes, such as individual cupcakes rather than a whole cake. Serving sizes are generally much larger than they really need to be.

4.       Eliminate store/restaurant bought foods and try a build-your-own pizza, wrap or pancake station with fresh vegetables and fruit and toppings.

5.       Serve hot popcorn and dark chocolate chips for a salty, sweet, and healthy snack.

6.       If your kids are old enough, make colorful fruit and veggie kabobs using fun cooking cutters to cut out different shapes. Serve these fun snacks with a homemade ranch or sweet sauce as dip.

7.       Make the party more about the events, rather than just the food. Mad Science uses events like bobbing for science, and crazy but easy lab experiments for your little scientists to enjoy!

It might seem like a daunting task to incorporate healthy foods and activities into your party ideas, but taking the initiative to design healthy and fun-looking treats is worth the effort! Not only do healthy foods incorporate the needed vitamins and minerals into your little one’s diet, they teach your children how to maintain a healthy life-style.
